Need a break or want to get out and enjoy nature for a while? New Zealand’s West Coast is where you’ve got to go! Known for its rugged natural beauty and abundance of epic sites, including lush rainforests, rugged beaches, and towering glaciers, the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island has a ton to offer, and there’s no better way to explore it all than freedom camping in a campervan.

Around the West Coast, there are a few great places to park your campervan for the night for free, but some require a small fee to cover maintenance costs. Below, we’ve listed some of the best and most affordable sites to stay at on your journey around the famous West Coast.

Why Hiring a Campervan for the West Coast is a Great Hire – Expert Advice

“The West Coast is one of those places where freedom camping feels exactly like it should — peaceful, wild, and full of discovery. From the moment you park beside Lake Paringa, you’re surrounded by native forest, birdsong, and the kind of quiet you can’t find anywhere else. The best part is how easy it is to access these natural sites in a campervan. You’re never far from a DOC track, a local café, or a stunning beach to watch the sunset from your back door. This region really showcases the magic of New Zealand’s South Island, raw beauty and total freedom.” – Bastian Graf, Global Sales & Marketing Manager, Travellers Autobarn

Paringa – Overnight Campervan Parking

Lake Paringa, South Island, New Zealand, Oceania

When you’re travelling between Haast and Fox Glacier, Paringa is the ideal spot to stop for a night or two. This relaxed freedom camping area is situated near Lake Paringa, offering peaceful views and ample space to unwind. It is open to both self-contained and non-self-contained vehicles, and the best part is that it is entirely free of charge.

Just remember not to park in the bus turning circle, as vehicles left here will be towed. You can stay for up to two nights, but fires are not permitted. If more than fifteen vehicles are already parked, you will need to move on to another site listed through the QR code on the signage.

The local Salmon Farm café nearby is a gem, and the owners helped make this site possible, so it is well worth popping in for a coffee or a hot breakfast before you hit the road again. The amenities are kept clean, the nights are quiet and incredibly peaceful, so you can fall asleep with the sound of the river nearby and the stars stretching out overhead. It is simple, peaceful, and everything you want from a classic Kiwi freedom camping experience.

Kumara Junction Cafe & Honey Centre

Turquoise waters flow through the Hokitika Gorge

If you are after an easy overnight stop between Greymouth and Hokitika, the Kumara Junction Cafe & Honey Centre is a great little find. The parking area is spacious and flat, providing ample space for self-contained campervans. Although there are no powered sites or showers, it is completely free and conveniently located.

You do need to sleep in your vehicle, and the spaces are available on a first-come, first-served basis, but they are rarely too crowded. Fires are not allowed, but you can use the Honey café’s toilets during opening hours. The team here is always friendly and welcoming, and the coffee is some of the best you will find on the West Coast. Make sure you try their blueberry muffins or grab a jar of local honey to take with you.

From this spot, you can easily visit Shantytown Heritage Park, explore the turquoise waters of the Hokitika Gorge, or enjoy a bit of fishing and kayaking at Lake Brunner. Kumara Junction is the kind of stop that makes campervan travel in New Zealand so enjoyable: easy, affordable, and run by people who genuinely care about the travellers who pass through.
