Whangamatā has long been one of the Coromandel Peninsula’s favourite coastal escapes. With a wide surf beach, calm harbour waters and a laid-back holiday-town atmosphere, it’s the kind of place where summer days drift easily between beach swims, coastal walks and fish and chips by the sea.

Located on the eastern side of the Coromandel Peninsula, the town is also a popular stop for campervan travellers exploring the region’s famous coastal drives. From here you’re within easy reach of other Coromandel highlights like Pauanui, Tairua and the winding scenic routes that trace the peninsula’s rugged shoreline.

While freedom camping options around Whangamatā are more limited than in some parts of the country, the Thames-Coromandel District Council does allow overnight stays in certain designated areas when responsible camping rules are followed.

In this guide, we’ll show you the best freedom camping Whangamatā, along with practical local tips to help you enjoy the Coromandel coastline responsibly.

Why Hiring a Campervan for Whangamatā Freedom Camping is a Great Idea – Expert Advice

“Whangamatā is a classic Coromandel beach town, so if you’re freedom camping nearby, try to plan your stay around the natural rhythm of the place. Spend the afternoon surfing or walking along the beach, grab fish and chips in town, and then head back to your campervan for the night. Early mornings here are especially special – quiet streets, calm seas and the sound of waves rolling in.” – Bastian Graf, Global Sales & Marketing Manager, Travellers Autobarn

Island View Reserve – Whangamatā

Whangamata Beach from the air, looking from the ocean back into the coastal town and shoreline.

Located on the southern side of town near the harbour entrance, Island View Reserve is one of the designated responsible camping areas in Whangamatā. The reserve sits close to the water and offers a convenient overnight stop within easy reach of the town centre.

Responsible camping is permitted in the top carpark under the council’s freedom camping bylaws, generally for certified self-contained vehicles only, with four designated spaces available. As with most council-managed sites, stays operate on a first-come, first-served basis and you could cop a $400 fine if you don’t stick to the designated spots. You can stay for a maximum of two consecutive nights, just be sure to arrive after 5pm and leave before 9am.

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is the location. The reserve is close to Whangamatā’s marina and harbour area, and from here you’re only a short drive – or bike ride – to the town’s main surf beach and cafés.

Travellers often spend the afternoon exploring the Whangamatā Beach coastline, kayaking to Whenuakura Island (Donut Island) or taking a walk along the sand before settling in for the night.

Responsible camping is permitted here for certified self-contained vehicles only, with just two designated spaces available. Stays are limited to a maximum of two consecutive nights, and vehicles must park within the clearly marked freedom camping areas. As with most council-managed sites, spaces operate on a first-come, first-served basis, so it’s worth arriving earlier in the evening during busy periods.

While the setting is more urban than some coastal camping spots, the location makes it a practical stop for travellers passing through the Coromandel Peninsula – with the beach, cafés and town centre all within easy walking distance.
