8 Must See Destinations on Your Auckland to the Bay of Islands Drive
Orewa Beach
Just 30 minutes north of Auckland, this laid-back seaside town is a great first stop to grab a coffee, take a beach walk, or even dip your toes in the water. The beach stretches for over 3 kilometres, making it perfect for a morning stroll after your flight or drive, and there’s also a town centre with bakeries, shops, and a relaxed atmosphere that sets the tone for the trip ahead.
Puhoi
A little village known for its historic pub and artisan cheese factory, this is a great place for a quirky pit stop. Puhoi has a rich Bohemian history, too, and you’ll see that reflected in its tiny museum and old-world atmosphere. Also, if you’ve got a little extra time, you can hire a kayak and paddle along the Puhoi River for a dose of nature before hopping back in your camper.
Warkworth
A peaceful riverside town with access to nearby attractions like the scenic Matakana wine region, Warkworth is a good place to stock up on supplies or enjoy a riverside picnic. There are plenty of cafés to choose from, too, and if you’re keen to explore further, the nearby Brick Bay Sculpture Trail and Goat Island Marine Reserve are worth a short detour.
Waipu Cove
A beautiful surf beach that’s ideal for a swim, picnic, or simply soaking up the coastal views, Waipu is popular with both locals and travellers. If you’re visiting in summer you might even catch one of the local surf competitions, while the nearby Waipu town is rich in Scottish heritage, and its museum gives a fascinating glimpse into the area’s history.
Whangarei Town Basin
This is a harbour precinct filled with cafés, galleries, and shops, making it a great spot for lunch or a wander. The marina is often dotted with yachts from around the world, giving the place a cosmopolitan feel, and there’s also a beautiful riverside walkway if you’d like to stretch your legs and take in the views before heading north.
Tip: Whangarei and the surrounding region also offer some excellent freedom camping spots, making it easy to spend the night by the coast and wake up to the sound of the ocean.
Whangarei Falls
Stretch your legs with a short walk to this spectacular 26-metre waterfall, located just outside Whangarei. The falls are surrounded by bush and walking tracks, so you can take a quick look or spend an hour wandering the loop track. It’s a classic Northland photo spot, too, and one of the easiest waterfalls in New Zealand to access.
Kawakawa
Famous for its quirky public toilets designed by Austrian artist Hundertwasser, this little town is full of character. Beyond its most unusual attraction, Kawakawa has a popular main street and is home to the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway, which runs steam train rides on certain days.
Paihia
