5 Must See Destinations on Your Auckland to New Plymouth Drive
Hamilton
Around 1.5 hours from Auckland, Hamilton is the first place to pull over and explore on your way to New Plymouth. The Hamilton Gardens are the star attraction here, taking you on a journey through themed gardens inspired by Japan, Italy, India, and more. Also, if you’re into craft beer, the city centre has a growing foodie scene, making it a great spot for lunch and picking up a few bottles to sample once you’ve reached your destination.
Waitomo Caves
As you head along Highway 3, make your next stop Waitomo Caves. You can take a guided tour through glowworm caves here, or if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try black water rafting through the dark, winding cave rivers in a rubber tube. It’s an incredible way to add something special to your road trip and is one of those “only in New Zealand” moments you won’t want to miss.
Te Kuiti
Known for being the sheep-shearing capital of the world, Te Kuiti is a small farming town with a big personality. The enormous statue of a shearer in the town centre is hard to miss and makes for a phone photo op, and it’s also a great stop to fuel up and stretch your legs before hitting the road again. You might even be lucky enough to catch a local farmer’s market while passing through.
Tongaporutu
As you head toward the New Plymouth Coast, make a stop at Tongaporutu, which is home to the famous “Three Sisters” rock formations. This spot is best visited at low tide, when you can walk along the black sand beach and get up close to the cliffs and sea stacks. Not to mention, the sunsets here are truly incredible.
Urenui
Just 25 minutes north of New Plymouth, you’ll find Urenui. This is another lovely little village and an ideal last stop before you reach the city, with a beach and estuary walks to explore. In fact, Urenui Beach itself is a great place to enjoy a quick dip or a picnic, and it’s also a popular fishing spot if you’re keen to cast a line before rolling into New Plymouth.
