7 Must See Destinations on Your Auckland to Whitianga Drive
Thames
A historic gold mining town on the western edge of the Coromandel Peninsula, Thames is often your first taste of that laid-back coastal trip that lies ahead. Here, you can explore the heritage buildings, pop into local craft shops, or check out the Thames Market on a Saturday morning. It’s also a good spot to top up supplies before heading further into the peninsula.
Coromandel Town
About halfway to Whitianga, Coromandel Town is packed with local art galleries and awesome little cafés. You can also take a ride on the Driving Creek Railway, which is a narrow-gauge train that winds through native forest and art sculptures with fantastic views at the top.
New Chums Lookout
As you make your way across the peninsula towards the east coast, stop at the New Chums Lookout for panoramic views over forested hills and the coastline. This is one of the lesser-known spots that locals love and the perfect place for a stretch and a few photos.
Kuaotunu
Just north of Whitianga, Kuaotunu is a small beachside village known for its white-sand beach, friendly atmosphere, and the famous Lukes Kitche, which is a must-visit if you’ve been dreaming of eating wood-fired pizza with a sea view. The beach here is great for swimming, too, or simply for soaking up the serenity before reaching your final destination.
Hot Water Beach
Just south of Whitianga, this famous beach offers a rare experience, dig your own natural hot pool in the sand as warm geothermal water bubbles up beneath you. Visit at low tide, spade in hand, and enjoy a relaxing soak with the ocean as your backdrop.
Cathedral Cove
One of New Zealand’s most photographed coastal landmarks, featuring a dramatic natural rock arch, white sand, and crystal-clear water. Accessible by foot, boat, or kayak from nearby Hahei, it’s a perfect spot for swimming, snorkelling, or simply soaking up the views.
Whitianga Wharf
Once you arrive in Whitianga, make your way to the waterfront and check out Whitianga Wharf. It’s full of opportunities for boat tours, fishing trips, and ferry rides over to Cooks Beach. You can also grab an ice cream, watch the boats come in, or book a tour out to Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach. Whatever you choose to do, a visit here is the perfect way to kick off your Coromandel adventure!
