3 Tips for driving your campervan around Christchurch

Christchurch is a great starting point for a campervan hiring NZ vacation because of its central location on the east coast of New Zealand’s South Island. Some of the world’s most breathtaking scenery can be seen in this area, and it’s all set up for motorhome rentals. Here are three tips to help you make the most of your trip:

AVOID PEAK HOUR TRAFFIC

If you can help it, try to avoid driving during peak hour traffic. The congestion in Christchurch can be quite bad, especially during the summer months. Typically, the worst time to be on the road is between 7 am and 9 am, and then again from 1 pm to 2 pm and 4 pm to 6 pm.

Of course, this will depend on where you’re going and when, but if you can plan your trips outside of these hours, you’ll have a much more enjoyable experience.

CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST

New Zealand’s weather can be unpredictable, so it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before you head out. Christchurch is particularly susceptible to heavy rain and high winds, so if the weather is looking bad, it’s best to stay put. The last thing you want is to be caught in a storm while driving, so if there’s even a chance of bad weather, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

USE A SAT NAV/GPS

Having a satellite navigation system is key for anyone travelling to an unfamiliar area. With GPS, you can rest assured that you will never get lost. The navigational tools are comprehensive and easy to use, with detailed instructions, real-time traffic data, and even backup paths.

Don’t fret if you don’t have a GPS system; most contemporary smartphones come with a mapping app already installed. Google Maps, for example, is complimentary on both iOS and Android devices. Simply enter your starting point and destination into the app before beginning your road trip in your campervan.

Make the most of your Christchurch campervan rental
FIND A GOOD LOCATION TO STAY

You can’t go wrong renting a campervan and driving around Christchurch. You won’t have any trouble finding a beautiful place to park your Camper for the night thanks to the abundance of holiday parks located all around the country.

At Travellers Autobarn, we provide are variety of standard as well as self-contained campervans. We recommend you to stay at DOC Campsites which costs you as little as $95 for 30 nights! Remember – unless you are planning to stay at a public car park or sports stadium over night there is no need to book a self-contained campervan…

We recommend downloading the Campermate app before your trip. This app has been developed specifically to enhance your campervan vacation. You won’t waste time wondering where the closest petrol station or campground is. If you’re looking for a place to get a drink of water, we’ve got you covered. Likewise, if you need to find the closest ATM, laundromat, or anything else, we’ve got you covered there, too.

Download the app today on Google Playstore or Apple App Store!
