3 Tips for driving your campervan around Auckland

For an exciting New Zealand road trip, check out these three tips for driving your Travellers Autobarn campervan around Auckland city and experience all that it has to offer!

AVOID PEAK HOUR TRAFFIC

Due to rapid population growth over the years, traffic in Auckland can be pretty bad, especially during peak hours. Typically, if you’re getting into the city, you’re better off avoiding the times between 6:30 am to 8:30 am and 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm if you’re leaving the city. This way, you can avoid the stress of being stuck in traffic and make the most of your time in Auckland.

CHECK THE WEATHER FORECAST

Auckland, situated on the northernmost tip of New Zealand’s main island, enjoys a temperate climate that makes it a pleasant visit any time of year. The city experiences warm, mostly dry summers and mild, rainy winters. However, although Auckland’s weather is generally good, it’s always a good idea to check the forecast before you head out in your campervan. This way, you can plan your activities and make the most of your time in Auckland, no matter what the weather may be.

USE A SAT NAV/GPS

A satellite navigation system, or GPS, is a fantastic resource for anyone visiting an unknown area. With its clear and user-friendly guidelines, live traffic updates, and alternative routes, you’ll never have to worry about getting lost.

If you don’t have a GPS system, don’t worry – most new smartphones come with a mapping app. Google Maps is free on both iOS and Android devices, for example. Enter your trip’s starting point and destination into the app before beginning your drive in your campervan.

Make the most of your Auckland campervan rental
FIND A GOOD LOCATION TO STAY

An excellent way to see all that Auckland has to offer is from the comfort of a campervan. You won’t have any trouble finding a beautiful place to park your Camper for the night thanks to the abundance of holiday parks all around the country.

At Travellers Autobarn, we provide are variety of standard as well as self-contained campervans. We recommend you to stay at DOC Campsites which costs you as little as $95 for 30 nights! Remember – unless you are planning to stay at a public car park or sports stadium over night there is no need to book a self-contained campervan…

We recommend downloading the Campermate app before your trip. This app has been developed specifically to enhance your campervan vacation. You won’t waste time wondering where the closest petrol station or campground is. If you’re looking for a place to get a drink of water, we’ve got you covered. Likewise, if you need to find the closest ATM, laundromat, or anything else, we’ve got you covered there, too.

Download the app today on Google Playstore or Apple App Store!

On Sundays, Clevedon hosts a massive farmers market where you can buy everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to handmade treats.

Tawharanui Regional Park
Tawharanui Regional Park is one of Auckland’s best-kept secrets and an absolute must for any visitor to the city. This area, which extends into the Pacific Ocean, was once a private farm. The lengthy northern beach is a popular place to surf and swim because it features some of Auckland’s most picturesque white sand beaches, shingled coves, native coastal forest, and rolling grasslands. Campervan sites are available, and the location is around 1.5 hours north of Auckland’s central business district.

Shakespear Regional Park
Shakespear Regional Park situated at the tip of a short peninsula features a beach and breathtaking cliff top views. BOOK AROUND THE WEATHER

The Auckland region enjoys a moderate, coastal climate with minimal temperature variations throughout the year. From late December to late March is the greatest time to travel to Auckland for warm-weather activities.

Summer in Auckland (December – February)
Summer in Auckland is often warm and humid, with an average daily temperature of 23 degrees Celsius. This is ideal for beach exploration, but during the middle of the day, UV radiation levels can reach dangerously high levels, so make careful to wear sunscreen and a hat.

Autumn in Auckland (March-May)
From March to May, Auckland sees a gradual transition from summer to autumn. The leaves on trees begin changing colour, but the weather remains mild and comfortable.

South-westerly winds tend to dominate in the spring, which is also when it can rain the most in Auckland. Extreme weather, such as cold fronts, heavy winds, and rainfalls, can develop rapidly. Captivating flowers and other blossoms are produced by the local flora and wildlife.

5 Must-see Destinations in Auckland

Auckland Harbour Bridge
Completed in 1959 at a length of almost a kilometre and a height of around 43 metres, the Auckland Harbour Bridge spans the central harbour and connects the city’s central business district to the northern suburbs and the sandy beaches of the bays further to the north island. If you’re looking to spice up your bridge visit, there are a ton of exciting activities available. The bungee jump off the Auckland Harbour Bridge is one of the most thrilling things to do in the world. The jumper walks down a private section of the bridge before he or she freefalls 40 metres into the harbour below.

Auckland’s Sky Tower
Sky Tower, the 328-metre-tall icon of Auckland and the tallest structure in New Zealand, stands out like a needle over the cityscape. On a clear day, you can see for more than 80 kilometres from the observation deck here, making it the ideal location to bring out your camera and capture the beautiful cityscape. This tower has become well-known as a premier destination for thrilling activities and fine dining experiences and serves as the city’s signature icon in New Zealand’s economic and cultural hub.

Waiheke Island
Waiheke Island is a fantastic day trip destination from Auckland, thanks to its proximity to the city and its many beaches, vineyards, and hiking trails. Take a dip in the pure waters of untouched beaches, and then spend the afternoon exploring prestigious vineyards.

The West Coast
The West Coast’s black sand beaches, steep hills, and turbulent seas are all stunning manifestations of nature’s destructive power. Exploring the rugged West Coast is a must for both natives and tourists drawn to the area by its breathtaking scenery. The west coast is a must-see for any visitor to Auckland, as it is frequently used as a movie site both globally and domestically. The finest waves in town can be found here, but before you dive in, make sure the flags are green. Some of New Zealand’s roughest oceans can be found here.

Waitakare Ranges
The Waitakere Ranges are a treasured destination for both locals and tourists thanks to its 16,000 acres of natural bush and beach. The ranges are great for hiking due to their abundant natural animals, unspoiled bushland, and rugged surf beaches that stretch for miles. Stunning natural attractions like Karekare Falls are conveniently close by.
